The objective of this procedure is to increase the size of your breasts, essentially adding volume. What Does The Gold Quality Care Standard Mean At The Sharp Clinic? While essential surgical skills and qualifications are highly important, the experience of having any treatment is certainly measured by more than just the time spent in the operating theatre or clinic chair. From your first consultation to your last follow-up, the staff at our Brisbane plastic and cosmetic surgery clinic will aim to support you with quality care and genuine compassion. Before & After ImagesTo view out extensive before and after gallery, please click here. At our clinic, you’ll find a supportive, comfortable environment to discuss your aesthetic goals with Dr. Sharp. What Are the Common Objectives for Breast Augmentation?Enlarging Breast Size: Some women seek to add volume to breasts that did not develop to be as large as they’d like.Adjust Breast Shape: Alter breast shape and increase firmness; implant selection enables the surgeon to do this using implant options, customised to your individual body shape and proportions.Replacement of Lost Volume: Factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing can affect breast shape. Breast augmentation can increase fullness.Revision of Prior Surgeries: For those who have had previous surgeries and are not satisfied with the results, a corrective breast augmentation may be considered.Who Is An Ideal Candidate? The most satisfied patients are those who seek change rather than perfection. If you are physically healthy, mentally and emotionally in a good place and have a realistic outlook on what to expect from the surgery, you are likely to be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Before making any decision, it’s essential to consult with Dr Sharp to discuss your specific needs and expectations comprehensively. How Do I Choose My Surgeon?Breast augmentation changes your body permanently. It is a major procedure – and therefore, choosing the right surgeon is of upmost importance. Breast augmentation surgery should be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon who is registered as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).Dr David Sharp is an Australian-qualified plastic surgeon with a special interest in breast augmentation surgery. His personalised approach means that you receive plenty of preoperative time with him to discuss your specific aesthetic features and any questions. Can I Combine My Breast Augmentation With a Breast Lift (Mastopexy), Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) or Vaser Liposuction?Dr Sharp often performs breast augmentation surgery alongside abdominoplasty and/or liposuction. He also performs breast augmentation and lift surgery. Advantages of combining procedures include the aesthetic benefit of having a combined result as well as clinical consideration such as the advantages of a single recovery, time off work and normal activities. This must be weighed against the increased risks of complications, slow healing and persistent swelling that can come when the body undergoes multiple procedures at the same time. These combined procedures are sometimes chosen by patients who have finished having children and wish to lift ptotic (sagging) breasts, replace lost volume, remove excess stomach skin or repair rectus divarication and hernias. This can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. If the implant shell leaks, a saline implant will collapse, and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Please note, Dr Sharp and his Brisbane breast implants team does not use saline implants.Silicone ImplantsA silicone envelope filled with an elastic gel that feels much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or it may escape into the scar capsule (area around the implant) or even into the breast tissue. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse.Round Breast ImplantsRound breast implants have a tendency to make breasts appear fuller. Higher profile options can achieve even more projection in the upper pole of the breast, and for this reason they are favoured by patients who seek an obviously augmented appearance. Because round implants are the same shape all over, there is less concern about them rotating out of place. Round implants usually have a smooth surface.Anatomical Breast ImplantsAnatomical (or tear drop) breast implants‘ main characteristics are a flatter upper breast pole and a fuller lower breast curve. This implant type is commonly used by Dr Sharp and his breast implants Brisbane team as it provides a result that most closely mimics the slope and shape of a breast.Ergonomix Breast ImplantsIntroduced by breast implant manufacturers Motiva, Ergonomix implants are round in appearance when laying flat on a surface, but move ergonomically when upright, forming a slightly teardrop shape. Patients may find they carry the benefits of a round implant (reduced rotation implications) while having a more anatomical look than a traditional round implant. They are a nano textured implant which significantly reduces the risk of biofilm development and BIA-ALCL.Smooth Breast ImplantsSmooth breast implants are the softest-feeling. These implants can move with the breast implant pocket, which may give more natural movement. Smooth implants may have some palpable or visible rippling. Smooth implants carry no risk of BIA-ALCL.Textured breast implantsTextured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and get repositioned. Texturing offers some advantage in diminishing the risk of a tight scar capsule. Highly textured (macro textured) implants are no longer available in Australia due to safety concerns. Micro textured implants are considered a safer option for patients looking for a textured implant’s benefits, with reduced risks of biofilm and BIA-ALCL. Nano or micro textured implants carry even lower risks of the aforementioned (rare) complications.Implant Placement: Above Muscle, Under Muscle or Dual Plane? There are two main kinds of implant placement:Above the muscle, whereby the implant is completely above the muscleUnder the muscle, whereby the implant is placed under the pectorals muscle, in varying degreesThe dual plane technique is a form of under the muscle breast implant placement. For the dual plane placement, implant is placed under the pectoral muscle at the upper, and sometimes mid, part of the breast; the lower part of the implant is not covered by the muscle. The varying different degrees of muscle coverage over the implant depends on the patient’s current breast shape and desired result, and that’s why it’s important to choose a surgeon that is experienced in this technique, as the ratio of muscle-covered implant to uncovered implant makes subtle adjustments that impact your result.Does Dr Sharp Perform Breast Fat Grafting?Dr Sharp has specialist plastic surgery experience in a range of breast related surgeries, offering personalised solutions to address various concerns and objectives, while fulfilling the unique needs of each patient. In addition to breast augmentation using breast implants, Dr Sharp performs several other breast-related procedures, aimed at altering the appearance, size and symmetry of the breasts.Breast fat grafting is only performed by Dr Sharp alongside breast implant for augmenting shape and size. As discussed in detail on this page, Dr Sharp uses a small amount of fat harvested from the patient’s body to soften the graduation between implant, skin and the patient’s natural chest anatomy. How Do I Choose the Right Implant Size?During your consultation with Dr Sharp, you will try on implant ‘sizers’ to provide an indication of the best implant size for your body. We also offer 3D simulation technology. Dr Sharp advocates a natural-looking approach to breast augmentation surgery that takes into consideration a woman’s frame to achieve a beautifully enhanced, balanced outcome. The human eye sees beauty in proportion; rather than distorting or exaggerating the body, ethical cosmetic surgery aims to restore balance and harmony, producing realistic results. Optimal results are obtained when the body is in proportion. The general risks of surgery may include: ScarringWhen the body goes through a healing phase after a surgical incision, scarring is a common outcome. The way scars appear and their level of severity depends on various factors, including the type of skin, genetic factors, as well as the size and location of the cut. Certain individuals might notice their scars becoming raised or enlarged, resulting in hypertrophic or keloid scars. In cases where a patient does not like the visual outcome of their scars, treatment options are available, but these should only be considered following advice from a surgeon.InfectionAny surgery, plastic surgery included, carries the risk of infection. This occurs when harmful microbes invade the surgery site, leading to symptoms such as swelling, heightened pain, formation of pus, and wounds that don’t seem to heal. Surgeons follow rigorous cleanliness procedures to minimise this risk, but it is crucial for patients to follow all post-surgical care directions meticulously. Quick recognition of symptoms and immediate intervention with antibiotics are key in addressing and eliminating infections.PainIt is normal to experience pain following surgical procedures, with the intensity and length of pain differing based on the surgical method and the individual’s tolerance to pain. A certain level of discomfort is to be expected, but if the pain becomes severe or lasts for an extended period, it may be indicative of a complication and should be looked into without delay. Pain management strategies, including prescribed medications and guidelines for rest and recovery, will be provided by the surgeon.BleedingSurgical procedures can sometimes result in bleeding, which can be external at the site of surgery or internal, leading to a condition known as hematoma. Signs of internal bleeding may include pain, pressure, and swelling in the area affected. It is critical to seek immediate medical help if you notice unusual bleeding or swelling after surgery.SeromaA seroma is an accumulation of clear lymph fluid under the skin, which can happen after surgery. This is due to the surgical disruption of lymph vessels, causing fluid to build up. Symptoms to look out for include pain, a sensation of pressure, and a noticeable swelling or clear fluid drainage at the surgical site. Generally, seromas are minor complications, but they may necessitate drainage or further treatment to ensure proper healing.Anesthesia ComplicationsAlthough anesthesia is crucial for managing pain during surgery, it does come with its own set of risks. These risks include allergic reactions, damage during intubation, malignant hyperthermia, as well as blood pressure or respiratory problems. Continuous monitoring during the procedure allows the surgical team to detect and deal with these complications quickly.Undesirable Cosmetic OutcomeDespite the use of tried-and-tested medical procedures and the experience of a qualified surgeon, there’s always a risk of not achieving the desired aesthetic result after plastic surgery. This could manifest as unevenness, skin puckering, or outcomes that don’t align with the patient’s expectations. It’s imperative to maintain realistic expectations and to discuss potential results during consultation sessions thoroughly. While revision surgery may be an option, it doesn’t guarantee correction of the issue.Nerve DamageAlthough it’s a rare occurrence, nerve damage is a possible complication of plastic surgery, potentially resulting from the manipulation of tissues or accidental nerve injury during the operation. Signs of nerve damage can include numbness, a tingling sensation, or a loss of feeling in the affected area. While nerve function typically restores over a period of weeks to months, there are instances where changes could be permanent. Prompt reporting of any unusual sensations after surgery is crucial.Bruising and SwellingBruising and swelling are typical responses of the body to surgical intervention. While these are normal parts of the healing process, excessive or extended periods of bruising and swelling require attention. Adhering to post-surgical care instructions, such as keeping the affected area elevated, applying cold packs, and refraining from intense activities, is essential. However, should you notice prolonged swelling or deep, extensive bruising, it’s vital to get in touch for a thorough evaluation.DeathDeath is an extremely rare but real risk in any surgical procedure. Causes could range from severe complications, adverse reactions to anesthesia, or pre-existing health conditions. Patient safety is paramount for surgeons and their teams, ensuring thorough pre-surgical screening and adherence to the latest surgical procedures and safety protocols. Being completely open about your medical history during consultations and following all given pre- and post-surgical instructions closely is of utmost importance.© Dr David Sharp 2025Dr David Sharp FRACS Plast is a qualified specialist plastic surgeon in Brisbane.
