A

Low downtime

IPL technology has been refined to provide unprecedentedly shorter downtime than traditional light based devices. When used alongside our prescriptive skin product program and exosome therapy, it provides rapid healing and results.

Does IPL fix sun damaged skin?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy offers significant benefits for sun-damaged skin, particularly in Queensland’s high UV environment. This noninvasive treatment is frequently utilised in cosmetic clinics to address various skin concerns caused by prolonged sun exposure, including hyperpigmentation, sunspots and uneven skin tone.

How does IPL work?

IPL works by emitting broad-spectrum light that targets pigmented lesions and vascular imperfections without harming the surrounding skin. The light energy is absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, which then breaks down and is naturally expelled by the body. This results in a more even skin tone and improved texture.

Why is IPL a popular treatment at The Sharp Cosmetic Clinics in Brisbane?

Queensland’s high UV index makes sun protection a constant challenge, leading to increased skin damage and premature aging. IPL offers a viable solution within a skin clinic setting, where patients can receive tailored treatments to reverse these effects. The procedure is typically well-tolerated with minimal downtime, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their skin while managing their busy lifestyles.

IPL Recovery: What to Expect After Your Treatment

Immediately following your IPL treatment

You might experience mild redness and swelling in the treated areas, similar to a mild sunburn. This is a normal response and typically subsides within a few hours to a couple of days.

In the days following your IPL treatment

You may also notice that pigmented spots or vascular lesions darken initially, which is a sign that the IPL treatment is working. These areas will eventually begin to flake off or fade over the course of one to two weeks. It’s important to avoid sun exposure during this period to prevent complications and ensure optimal results. Daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF is crucial for protecting the treated skin.

Skin may feel dry or slightly irritated, so using gentle moisturisers and avoiding harsh skincare products is recommended. Most patients can resume normal sun-safe activities immediately, though some choose to wait until any redness has fully subsided for cosmetic reasons.

In the weeks following your IPL treatment

Now that the pigmentation has begun to lift, treated areas will continue to lighten and refine over the coming weeks. The skin’s response varies depending on the area treated; for instance, the face is more sebaceous and sheds faster compared to other areas like the chest or arms. Now can be a good time to book in for a HydraFacial treatment to help exfoliate any remaining dead skin cells and deliver an infusion of skin-refining actives that will boost your results.

When do I see the results from my IPL treatment?

Results continue to improve as the skin heals, revealing a more even and rejuvenated complexion around 6 weeks after treatment. It’s easy to forget what your skin looked like before your treatment, which is why we recommend a complimentary check up consult at 4-6 weeks after your treatment, to review your skin’s response, determine if further treatment is needed and compare its progress against the photos taken before your IPL treatment.

Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve your desired results. Once you reach your goals, annual maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain the benefits.

About the Nordlys IPL

Our Nordlys device harnesses medical grade technology to uniquely target multiple  skin complaints: the discolouration caused through sun damage, pigmentation or age spots – as well as lines, wrinkles, congestion or a dull complexion created by poor skin condition or the natural ageing process that depletes our collagen.

Using this device, our experienced clinicians can target these individually, or together in a single treatment, saving you treatment time, money and downtime.

I want to improve sun damage

Does pigmentation, melasma and the signs of sun damage make you look older than you feel? If you need makeup to cover up brown spots and discolouration, talk to us. IPL will remove skin that’s been prematurely aged by our Queensland climate, leaving you with skin so beautiful, you’ll want to wear it bare!

I want a better complexion

IPL laser reduces lines, enlarged pores, congestion and acne scars by removing old, stressed skin and stimulating the growth of a healthy, fresh and luminous complexion. This also encourages the production of the body’s own collagen, to plump and smooth.

…I want to do both!

One of  our device’s unique benefits is that it enables us to treat many skin issues all at once! Redness, pigmentation,  lines, capillaries, pores and skin condition are treated using IPL, fractionated laser and Nd:YAG vascular laser all in the one convenient treatment .

Better skin is only a phone call away.

How IPL works…

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy operates on the principle of selective photothermolysis to address pigmentation and enhance skin rejuvenation. IPL emits broad-spectrum light in multiple wavelengths, typically between 500 to 1200 nanometers. This light is absorbed by specific chromophores in the skin, primarily melanin in pigmented lesions and hemoglobin in vascular structures.

For pigmentation, the IPL device targets melanin granules within hyperpigmented areas, such as age spots and sunspots. The absorbed light energy is converted into thermal energy, causing the melanin to break down into smaller particles. These fragmented pigment particles are then phagocytosed by macrophages and eliminated through the body’s natural processes, leading to a reduction in pigmentation.

In terms of skin rejuvenation, IPL stimulates dermal fibroblasts by penetrating the upper layers of the skin. This thermal effect promotes collagen synthesis and remodeling, resulting in improved skin texture, elasticity, and overall appearance. The light energy also induces vascular damage, which reduces erythema and telangiectasia, contributing to a more even skin tone.

Overall, IPL effectively targets pigmentation while promoting collagen production, offering dual benefits for both cosmetic changes and skin health.

The Top 10 Questions Patients Ask Us About IPL Treatments

_________________________________________

1. What is IPL therapy, and how does it work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses a broad spectrum of light to target pigmentation, vascular lesions, and skin texture irregularities.

Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths, allowing it to treat different skin conditions simultaneously.

The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by melanin (in pigmented lesions) or hemoglobin (in vascular lesions), breaking down the pigments and stimulating collagen production.

2. What skin concerns can IPL therapy address?

IPL therapy is highly effective for a variety of skin issues, including:

  • Hyperpigmentation (sunspots, age spots, melasma)
  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Broken capillaries and spider veins Research shows that IPL can significantly improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity, making it an excellent option for comprehensive skin rejuvenation
3. Is IPL effective for treating melasma?

Yes, IPL can be effective for treating melasma, but it must be approached with caution due to the condition’s complex nature. Melasma is often hormonally driven and can be exacerbated by UV exposure. IPL targets melanin, breaking down pigmentation, but combining IPL with pigment-inhibiting skincare, such as hydroquinone or azelaic acid, and strict sun protection, can enhance the results. We also use Fraxel in our Ipswich clinic and Nordlys fractionated laser in our Brisbane clinic for melasma treatment.

4. How many IPL sessions are needed for visible results?

The number of IPL sessions varies based on the condition being treated and the individual’s skin type. Typically, patients require 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve significant improvement. For example, studies have shown that pigmentation and redness improve markedly after 3 sessions, while acne scars and textural issues may require more treatments

5. What are the side effects of IPL therapy?

IPL is generally well tolerated, but side effects may include temporary redness, swelling and mild discomfort at the treatment site. In rare cases, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur, especially in individuals with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI). Research has also shown a low but potential risk of scarring and blistering. Risks are reduced by using a high quality IPL device, choosing an experienced clinician and strictly following post treatment care protocols.

6. Can IPL be used on all skin types?

IPL is most effective on lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick types I-III) because it targets melanin in the skin. Darker skin tones (types IV-VI) have a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or burns due to the higher melanin content. However, our new-generation IPL device has customisable settings, which have made it safer for a wider range of skin tones, when administered by an experienced practitioner

7. How does IPL compare to laser treatments?

While both IPL and laser therapies are effective light based therapies for skin rejuvenation, they work differently. Lasers use a single wavelength of light, making them highly specific for particular skin concerns (e.g. deeper wrinkles). IPL, on the other hand, uses a broad spectrum of light, allowing it to address multiple skin issues in one session. For example, IPL can treat both pigmentation and vascular lesions simultaneously.

8. What is the recovery time after IPL therapy?

One of the advantages of IPL is minimal downtime. Most patients experience redness and slight swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, which resolves within 1 to 3 days. In some cases, pigmented areas may darken before they flake off over the course of a week. Patients are generally advised to avoid direct sun exposure and to use sun protection diligently

9. Can IPL prevent future pigmentation or skin aging?

While IPL is effective for treating existing pigmentation and skin issues, it does not prevent future damage. Maintaining results depends on diligent sun protection, the use of antioxidant-rich skincare, and regular maintenance IPL sessions. Studies suggest combining IPL with topical treatments, such as vitamin C or retinoids, can help maintain skin clarity and prevent the reoccurrence of pigmentation.

10. Is IPL safe for acne-prone skin?

Yes, IPL can be used for acne treatment. It works by reducing inflammation, destroying acne causing bacteria, and minimising post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Research shows IPL improves acne related redness and reduces PIH, especially in patients with mild to moderate acne. It is often combined with other acne treatments for more comprehensive results.
