How many breast augmentations are performed annually?

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common procedures requested in our Brisbane clinic.

Figures released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in November 2018 show that 1,677,320 breast augmentations were performed internationally in 2017.

According to the Australian Breast Device Registry (ABDR), an estimated 20,000 women undergo breast augmentation surgery every year in Australia – for cosmetic reasons or reconstruction after cancer.

Breast augmentation continues to be the most popular plastic and cosmetic surgery procedure around the world, and in Australia. In our clinics, it is closely followed by abdominoplasty, facelift, breast reduction or breast lift and blepharoplasty surgery.

The government has provided a helpful guide for patients considering this surgery: click here to view the Therapeutic Good Administration’s Breast Augmentation resources.

When considering breast augmentation surgery, it’s essential to consider both the benefits and risks of this procedure, and whether or not these are right for you and your lifestyle.

Replacement of Breast Volume Post-Pregnancy or Weight Loss

Following pregnancy or significant weight loss, patients may experience a reduction in breast volume. Breast augmentation can be an option to add volume to the breasts, although it is important to note that it is unlikely that they will be the same as their previous appearance, as silicone implants look different to natural breast tissue.

Reduction of Breast Asymmetry

Some patients may have noticeable differences in the size or shape of their breasts. In such cases, breast augmentation can be used to reduce asymmetry, potentially also with mastoepxy (breast lift) surgery performed at the same time, or as as staged procedure

Reconstruction Following Mastectomy

Breast augmentation can be an integral part of the reconstructive process for those who have had a mastectomy due to breast cancer treatment. This procedure seeks to reconstruct the breast to a shape and size similar to its appearance before surgery.

Addressing Congenital Breast Anomalies

Patients with congenital breast anomalies, such as tuberous breast deformity, might opt for breast augmentation as a surgical option. This approach aims to modify the size and shape of the breasts.

It is important to understand that breast augmentation, like any surgical procedure, involves risks and should be thoroughly discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Decisions regarding surgery should be based on individual medical needs and realistic expectations of surgical outcomes.
