Advanced Facelift Course Brings Plastic Surgeons from Around the World Together to Share and Learn

Dr Sharp recently attended the Milano Face Institute’s MFI Academy in Milan, where leaders in the international plastic surgery community such as Dr Mario Pelle Ceravolo and Dr Alessandro Gualdi facilitated an intensive course for a small group of advanced facelift surgeons.

The course focused specifically on the lower third of the face and neck region, under the guidance of plastic surgeons who have dedicated their practices to performing, teaching and researching facial plastic surgery.

The origins of modern plastic surgery are entwined with Italy’s history. During the sixteenth century, surgeons such as Gaspare Tagliacozzi developed new surgical methods, establishing Italy as a centre for plastic surgery innovation. In the nineteenth century, notable surgeons such as Sabattini, Tansini, Sterzi, Pieri and more recently, Sanvenero Rosselli, made groundbreaking contributions that helped to shape the field of plastic surgery in its contemporary form.

Anatomical dissection of the lower face, incision planning, deep plane and SMAS plication techniques, complication and risk management and platysma tightening were just some of the topics explored.

The emergence of trends, and the pitfalls of allowing social media and ‘Dr Google’ to guide surgical practice or place pressure on surgeons to perform procedures that may not offer longevity or optimal safety, was also an issue of current concern.

In the course’s ‘share, watch and do’ education model, surgeons experienced hands-on training, live operating as well as round table discussions, enabling them to compare and share techniques and experiences.

As the only Australian plastic surgeon in attendance, Dr Sharp was pleased note that facelift techniques commonly used by plastic surgeons in Australian are at the forefront of best practice; largely thanks to:

  • =the excellent anatomy, microsurgery and facial plastic surgery education that surgeons undergo through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ training program
  • =a culture of generous mentorship by senior colleagues, such as Dr Bryan Mendelson in Melbourne
  • =ongoing professional development through the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Good plastic surgeons never stop learning and pioneering new or improved ways to achieve optimal surgical outcomes for their patients. Finding time away from their busy practices in order to learn with other surgeons can be a challenge, and Dr Sharp was grateful to have the opportunity to attend this important course. Thank you to the Institute’s faculty for providing an informative program.
