What is breast lift surgery?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that raises, firms and reshapes the breasts. Excess skin is removed to tighten the surrounding tissue and to reshape and support the new breast contour.

For women with breast ptosis - whereby the nipple sits below the inframammary fold, or points down - a mastopexy results in the nipple sitting higher on the breast.

The internal breast tissue is usually reshaped as well. Sometimes the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this too.

What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, can be a cosmetic procedure - or a reconstructive procedure, in the case of breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy or trauma.

The procedure involves implants - usually silicone - being inserted beneath the breast muscle, or sometimes, above the muscle. The objective of this procedure is to increase the size of your breasts, or restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

Combining implants and a lift

Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and volume and begin to sag.

A breast lift cannot increase the size of your breasts or replace volume at the top, and a breast augmentation cannot correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to be raised and increased in volume, a breast augmentation and lift procedure can be performed in conjunction.
